MatchBox Map Matching Software and Tools
NSL's advanced map matching software, MatchBox, combines GNSS derived positions of a vehicle with GIS-based road information to determine the exact journey traveled.

The software has been developed using a combination of mathematical theory and real-world practice and has been used for applications throughout Europe, USA and the Far East.

MatchBox is designed for volume applications that require confidence of the route a vehicle has taken, producing a "confidence factor" summarising whether GPS can be relied upon for liability critical applications. The advanced algorithms mean that MatchBox will work in all environments, including high-rise inner cities and business districts which present many challenges to GNSS due to signal masking and multipath.

Developed in accordance with specific needs of the telematics market and to support large scale infrastructures and programmes, MatchBox is a hosted application that resides in the back-office and can support a high throughout processing of GPS data. MatchBox is designed for:
  • Road User Charging (RUC)
  • Pay-as-you-drive (PAYD) Insurance
  • Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA)
  • Traffic loading and prediction
  • Fleet Management
  • Telematics (after theft tracking, remote immobilization)

Tourismo is a journey analysis utility that accompanies MatchBox for use in road charging schemes. These assets generate the following types of output of interest to an external driver assessment / PAYD charging engine.
  • distance traveled per road type
  • cumulative distances over time, referenced to road names/IDs/time windows
  • road swaps (variety and changeability in roads used)
  • speed profiling and speed limit violations
  • stop and start activity
  • driving through accident black-spots and hazardous locations
  • passing through or parking in areas of high crime zones
