The InsideGNSS article discusses the methodology that has been developed as part of the FLAMINGO initiative, which provides real-time PPP and RTK GNSS positioning on smartphones and IoT devices. The article also explores the application of PPP as a real-time positioning service on the smartphone. The FLAMINGO service has achieved sub-meter positioning accuracies (below the 50 cm benchmark) in real-time. However, whilst PPP is operational for IoT devices that use dedicated GNSS modules, for the smartphone this high accuracy service is RTK-based and reliant on base station infrastructure within approximately 30 km of the user. This article describes our research findings implementing and testing the various freely available PPP products for Smartphone positioning.

PRESS RELEASE: The World's First Sub-metre Positioning Service for Smartphones

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 25 February 2020

 

NSL are pleased to announce that FLAMINGO is now demonstrating a live geolocation positioning service for Smartphones that delivers half-metre (0.5m) accuracies for immediate integration into Smartphone Apps. 

 

FLAMINGO has been developed over the past two years and applies advanced Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning principles to Smartphone and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. 

To date, Smartphones have only been able to achieve positioning accuracies of between 3 and 5m, sufficient for most satnav Apps such as vehicle and pedestrian routing and guidance.  However, a recent Google API provided access to measured distances to the GNSS satellites allowing advanced positioning concepts to be used.  FLAMINGO has used this data to enable a service that combines Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) concepts for Smartphones and IoT.  FLAMINGO encapsulates the data capture and service delivery providing seamless high accuracy positioning via a simple Application Program Interface (API).

FLAMINGO’s half-metre accuracy positioning enables a new suite of location-based applications, which are either new products or enhanced features to existing location-based products.  Potential applications include augmented reality, impaired navigation, precise fitness performance apps, surveying with a Smartphone, street navigation with footpath precision.

FLAMINGO is showcasing the future of GNSS technology in Smartphones.  Demonstrations of the system are to be held in Nottingham, London, Barcelona, Gdansk/Gydnia and Toulouse and are open to interested users, potential stakeholders and App developers.  Further information can be found on the FLAMINGO website, www.FlamingoGNSS.com.

FLAMINGO is a collaborative partnership led by NSL (Nottingham Scientific Ltd) (UK) and including Telespazio France (FR), Rokubun (ESP), Thales Alenia Space France (FR), VVA (IT), ECLEXYS (CH), Blue Dot Solutions (PL) and the University of Nottingham (UK).  The venture is part-funded through the European GNSS Agency and has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement number 776436.
